Moonton, a subsidiary of ByteDance, created and distributed Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, also known as ML or MLBB, a mobile multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game. The game, which was released in 2016, gained in popularity around the world, particularly in Southeast Asia, and has since surpassed 1 billion downloads, with peak monthly players of 100 million. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang surpassed the $1 billion mark in revenue in 2021, with 44 percent of income coming from outside Asia, making it the top mobile game of its genre with the most worldwide appeal.
Two 5-person teams compete against each other in this game. Players must fight over three lanes to take the enemy's tower and protect their own in this traditional battle arena game.
Moonton entered the esports scene by launching the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League (MPL) in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and North Africa regions, which serves as a qualifier for the Mobile Legends World Championships, in which a total of 15 countries, including Japan, Russia, Turkey, and the United States, have competed so far.
